- Airtight container
- Cutting board
- Air fryer (preheated to 350°F)
- Small bowl
Ingredients
For the Petals
- 1 large onion
- 1 tbsp whole milk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 egg
- ¼ cayenne pepper
- ½ tbsp pepper
- ½ tbsp paprika
- ½ tbsp garlic powder
- ½ tbsp baking powder
- ½ tbsp onion powder
- Non-stick cooking oil
For the Sauce
- ⅛ tbsp paprika
- ⅛ tbsp dried oregano
- ⅛ tbsp onion powder
- 3 tbsp ketchup
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise
- ¼ tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ⅛ tbsp garlic powder
- ⅛ tbsp horseradish
- ⅛ tbsp pepper
- ¼ tbsp salt
Instructions
To get the petals ready
- Pre-heat the airfryer to 350°F.
- Divide the onion in half, preserving the root end; cut every half into 3 wedges, then cut the root end off; make petals from each wedge; put away.
- Beat the egg and milk together in a small bowl.
- Combine the flour, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and baking powder in a large resealable bag.
- Seal the bag, add the onions, and shake to coat.
- Transfer the petals to the egg mixture and shake off the excess flour.
- Get back to the flour blend and shake to cover.
- In the air fryer, place the flower petals.
- Liberally cover the onions with non-stick cooking oil; Dry flour should not be visible.
- Cook for 5 minutes; flip the petals; Spray once more with oil to make sure there isn't any dry flour; Cook another five minutes in the air fryer.
- Yet again, at last, flip the onions and cook for 5 minutes.
Making the sauce
- In a little bowl, join the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt and pepper.
- Place in a refrigerator-safe container that keeps out air.
Notes
- For a healthier twist, you can bake the petals in a preheated oven at 400°F for about 15-20 minutes, flipping them halfway through to ensure even browning.
- If you’re not a fan of onions or prefer a milder flavor, you can replace the onion petals with zucchini or bell pepper strips. Just adjust the cooking time accordingly.
- To add a touch of heat to the sauce, you can include a few dashes of hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Storing Leftovers:
Assuming you end up having any extras, you can store them in a water/air proof compartment in the cooler for as long as 2 days. Nonetheless, it’s important that the firm surface of the petals might reduce marginally upon refrigeration. You can crisp up the leftovers by reheating them in the air fryer for a few minutes before serving them.
Food and Drink Pairings:
The Corn Salad with Tomatoes, Basil, and Cilantro pairs beautifully with various dishes and beverages. Here are a few suggestions to enhance your culinary experience:
- Pair it with grilled chicken or fish for a complete and satisfying meal.
- Serve it alongside a juicy burger for a delightful contrast of flavors and textures.
- Enjoy it with a chilled glass of white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay, to complement the freshness of the salad.
