- 2 cup whole milk
- 1 small onion, peeledand studded with cloves
- 1 bay leaf
- ½ tbsp salt
- 6 black peppercorns
- ½ tbsp grated nutmeg
- ½ cup fresh breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp butter
Preparing the Bread Sauce
Pour the milk into amedium saucepan and add the onion, bay leaf, salt, peppercorns, and gratednutmeg.
Bring the milk to amoderate simmer in the saucepan over medium heat. To integrate the flavors intothe milk, let it boil for around 10 minutes.
After the saucepanhas simmered, turn off the heat and leave it alone to cool a little. The flavorswill blend together over this chilling period.
After the milk hascooled, drain it to get rid of the onion, bay leaf, and peppercorns. Then pourthe milk into a fresh pot.
Cooking the Bread Sauce
Place the saucepanwith the strained milk back on the stove over low heat.
Gradually whisk inthe fresh breadcrumbs, ensuring they are fully incorporated into the milk.
Stir the sauce occasionally, allowing it to simmer gently for approximately 10 minutes. The breadcrumbs will absorb the milk and thicken the sauce.
Add the butter to the sauce and stir until it has melted completely.
Continue cooking the sauce for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a smooth and creamy consistency.
Once the sauce has thickened, remove it from the heat and transfer it to a serving dish.
